What’s on your summer book stack?

Is your bedside book stack piled so high it’s about to fall over, or are you wondering what to read this summer? We asked a few NZEI Te Riu Roa members what they are hoping to get into for some downtime over the break. Here are their lists.

Louise Partleton, kindergarten teacher

I have just finished reading A Woman of Courage by Tania Blanchard which is set in the 1890s about Hannah Todd who dreams of a future when women have the right to vote. I found it an amazing book and my eldest son bought it for me knowing I have a keen interest in women’s rights and unions.

Next on my list (also from my son) is The Dressmaker and the Hidden Soldier by Doug Gold. It is the true story of a New Zealand soldier’s wartime courage, escape and romance. I can’t wait to start this one!

I am also looking forward to reading Invisible Women – Exposing Data Bias in a World Designed for Men by Caroline Criado Perez. This book is the 2019 Science book prize winner so should be a great read.

Scarlet Bennett, ECE teacher

I have a couple of topics I’m interested in at the moment. One is te ao Māori and the other is health and wellbeing. Some in my list are:

Te Aroha Hiko, Special Education Advisor

Reading: Two books I want to read are Hine Toa – A story of bravery by Ngāhuia Te Awekōtuku and Kawai – For Such a Time as This by Dr Monty Soutar

Listening: Teddy Swims, Stan Walker, Mahina Lawrence, and lots of old school in between times.

Jo Westley, support staff

Lovi Collier, primary teacher

I basically read whatever takes my fancy, if the synopsis doesn’t grab my attention then I don’t bother reading it. So this lot is what is currently on my craft table.

The Book of Doors by Gareth Brown is a recommended read. I finished it after Te Kāhui Whetū and I’m ready to reread and annotate.

Enola Holmes – The Graphic Novels by Serena Blasco and The Skylarks’ War by Hilary McKay I have shared this term with Year 5 and Year 8 children.

Atlas – The Story of Pa Salt by Harry Whittaker and Lucinda Riley I received as a gift and I’ve had some sneak previews of it. I’m tracking down the Seven Sisters Series so I can get to grips with annotating this one.

The Bookbinder of Jericho and The Dictionary of Lost Words by Pip Williams I have to read because they have been sitting on my shelf since August.

I enjoy annotating books that put me in a good mood or I get to reflect on. Here’s some more detail about why I annotate as part of a workshop that I ran.
